I can do it myself...or not

Day 4 of 31
Thank G-d, my 4 year old son has the ability to do almost everything by himself.  However, when he is around me, he does almost nothing by himself.  He loves for me to do almost everything him.

Mommy, put on my socks.

Mommy, put on my shoes.

Mommy, wipe me.

 Mommy, carry me.

It never ends.

My theory is that boys love having their mothers do things for them.  I overhear the boys in high school talk about how their mothers still pack their lunch, do laundry, wake them up in the morning.  Really?  And I am leading my son in this direction.

I'm sure at some point he will grow out of his Mommy dependency, but when seems to be the pertinent question.

I also have an 11 month old daughter, she seems to be more independent already, but time will tell.

  1. It can happen so easily. I think we, as moms don't easily drop the role of "do everythinger" for our children that is of a nurturing nature. Remember the goal! Independence. If they CAN do it, they SHOULD do it! Good luck on cutting those apron strings! And you are right, there does seem to be a difference in the strength of those apron strings that are attached to boys vs. girls!

  2. Sounds like maybe having an 11 month old sibling could be the cause of his wanting mommy to do everything for him--you see while you are doing for him, he also has your attention!! So show him how much confidence you have in his big boy abilities. I agree with Donna, if you know he is capable of doing it --then encourage him to actually do it himself Then give him all the praise and attention afterwards for being so big and independent! Good luck!

  3. I like your honest voice in this slice. It's hard to ask ourselves if what we do now sets us up for futures we might not want. I'm with Crouchmamma--with the 11 month-old and the attention.

  4. I know you and J. I think he's going to turn out just fine! Perhaps it's just a call for attention because A is taking up your time too and he wants to still be mama's baby sometimes.

I think that you're being very aware of the issue and therefore he's not going to be a high schooler asking you to pack his sandwich. :)
